Astarte | ||
| Home Port: | Bremerhaven |
Finkenwerder cutters cruised the North Sea until the beginning of the 20th century. Their typical silhouette did not vanish from the horizon until the triumphant advance of steam ships. The flag ship of Bremerhaven’s guild of skippers, the “Astarte”, built in 1903, is one of the last remaining specimens of this swimming legend. When the founders of the guild of skippers bought the cutter in 1978, there was not much left to identify her origin. Lots of detailed work was needed to restore the „Astarte“, which now looks again like the ship that left August Albers’ dockyard at the banks of the river Elbe more than a hundred years ago. She is one of the first German traditional sailing ships that took part in the regattas of the International Sail Training Association (ISTA, nowadays STI - Sail Training International).

Due to her solid construction classified for the polar seas, she was used in the difficult Norwegian waters until 1942. During the Second World War, the Solvang was commandeered by the British Navy and used as a headquarters’ boat at the Shetland Islands. Her masts were removed. Between 1945 and 1979 she was used as a coaster between Haugesund and the Lofoten islands. Vadder Gerrit II | ||
| Home Port: | Weener |
The „Vadder Gerrit II“ was launched in 1897 in Waspik, Netherlands. She was built for cargo transport in shallow coastal waters but serves today as a cruise vessel or simply as a “swimming hotel”. Her former cargo-compartment was turned into a rustic but cosy accommodation for 10 to 12 people. A big table with wooden crates that serve for seats invites the guests to a cosy get-together or a joint breakfast. The crew’s philosophy is to benefit from nature without destroying it. Sailing on the „Vadder Gerrit II“ makes you step back into the 19th century. Although the „Vadder Gerrit II” has indeed a 90 PS diesel engine, the crew prefers the traditional way of sailing under sails. It is not possible to sail the “Vadder Gerrit II” alone, but a whole team is needed on board that grows together quickly during the daily routine.
