The wage of the long journey

11.03.05

The republic of Poland is partner of the 15th Hanse Sail

It’s hard to say how often Roland Methling, as leader of the Hanse Sail office, has been in our eastern partner land Poland in the last 15 years to create a maritime and friendly relationship.

In particular the 8 hour ride Rostock – Gdansk is often to find in the logbook. The reason for the long trip through the nice coast streets was to advertise for Polish traditional sailing ships, the common struggle for a Baltic Sail combination and also the presentation of the hanseatic city of Rostock and the Hanse Sail.

The souvenirs from the Polish Baltic Sea coast do not get dusty in a souvenir cupboard in the Sail office, but they are fresh and alive. In 1997 the hansatic city of Gdansk was a member of the foundation of the Baltic Sail movement. The financial investment for the maritime combination was even harder for the Polish treasurer than for the German, Swedish or Danish.

As well for Andrzej Radomski, boss of the Baltic Sail in Gdansk, there is no way to long. Since 1998 he is a dedicated and creative combatant for the popularization of the idea to make the Baltic Sea the home of traditional sailing vessels, for example at the "boot 2005" in Düsseldorf or at the 15th Hanse Sail in Rostock.

6 decades after the end of the 2nd world war, started in the bay of Danzig, the republic of Poland is the partner land of the big maritime celebration. Maritime ambassadress is the Brigg FRYDERYK CHOPIN from Rostock's twin town Szczecin. The 56 meter long ship with 1200 square meter sail plain was designed by the famous Polish constructor Zygmunt Choren, whose big sailing ships, for example the MIR and the KHERSONES, form the sail celebrations all around the world.

The international market of the Hanse Sail at the "Headge-Halbinsel" in the city harbour will be formed by presentations of the food economy, the maritime economy, the handicraft and the tourism of our eastern neighbour country. What are "Shantys a capella"? This, the Polish group "Shantymen", also take part for years at Hanse Sail, will demonstrate you.
So Andrzej Radomski will be very busy at the 15th Sail and also be happy about how naturally the German-Polish relationships are. Even it is a result of the long trips between Rostock and Gdansk and the other way round. Roland Methling for his part will place in his Lord Major desk in summer and plan new journeys, Poland as well. For his work at the Lord Major desk and on the way all sail friends and combatant wish him good luck and success.
